Rarely has a Wii game looked so beautiful, even before the disc is in the machine it’s a visual treat with the box’s reversible slip sporting Yashushi Suzuki’s intricate artwork that informs the game itself. Locales are rich and varied, from underwater tunnels to decimated cityscapes and onto outerspace itself, although it’s the enemy design that’s deserving of the most plaudits. Bosses are the high watermark in this regard (the dolphins with laser tails holding a special place in our own hearts, although others will have their own personal favourites) but even the cannon fodder is wonderfully realised – and typically strange – with levels patrolled by S & M robots on stilts and skittering tadpoles.

A sequel to a 10 year old cult classic that never made it out of Japan, Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Skies is that rarest of beasts; a Wii game that panders to the hardcore. It’s so much more besides as well – a glorious ride through twisted artwork and twisting bullet patterns, it’s one of this year’s greatest pure gameplay experiences, regardless of platform.

Two playable characters head up the charge against the onslaught of enemies, and both offer subtly different play styles. Isa is the default choice, a jetpack-sporting kid with a Charge Shot that acts like a mini smart bomb. Kachi is his female counterpart, using a hoverboard to scoot between bullets and with a Charge Shot that’s got a Rez-style lock-on effect, having the ability to take down multiple enemies once the button’s released.

A swift dodge is available to both, as is a melee attack, handy in close encounters but equally useful in batting back missiles. Those are the basics, and they’re well served by the Wii’s multitude of control options. The premium configuration utilises the Nunchuck’s analogue stick to control characters while the Wii Remote is in charge of the shooting reticule.

While this game never asks anything more of the player than dodge and shoot, it conjures up surprising new ways to ask that simple question, happily segueing from 3D to 2D gunplay or throwing in an extended jetbike-powered shootout. It even flies deliciously close to becoming a survival horror in one night bound level, with the character’s guns doubling up as a flashlight as they work their way through a forest riddled with possessed houses and dark spirits.

Sin and Punishment Successor of the Skies’ levels are punctuated by these epic fights, with enemies ranging from hulking mechs and colossal beasts through to one-on-one encounters. They provide some exhausting tests of attrition, though it’s an ecstatic exhaustion that’s felt once they go down in show-stopping and screen-filling explosions.

The story within The Forgotten Sands is filled with some clever twists and turns as it unfolds slowly but steadily through dialogue between the Prince and his genie…as well as comments from an unseen narrator. All this happens as the Prince (that’s you!) explores his palace and fends off the enemy infestation. In true Prince of Persia fashion, players can climb walls and ledges, run across walls, and spin off flagpoles to explore his surroundings. He’s also a powerful swordsman, so expect to get in a few scuffles along the way.

The fights do play second banana to the exploration and puzzle solving, and if you’re not big on controller waggling this game won’t change your mind. Using the right hand motion for sword swinging and left hand for punching is a capable fighting system. There are special moves and combos to pull off, but by the time you power up the prince you’ll probably just end up waggling both controllers together for the powerful “whirlwind” move.

The real hook in the Wii version is the addition of three unique powers. The first is the ability to conjure sand spires that send the Prince upwards, gaining him access to ledges that were out of reach from standard jumping and wall climbing abilities. The second is the ability to place magical hooks along the walls, turning pretty much any surface into a ledge you can grab. At first, these powers restrict their use to specific spots on the floors and walls, but deeper in the game you’ll actually be given the freedom to place hooks and sand spires on pretty much any wall or floor: simply point the Wii remote at where you want them, and click. Very late in the game you’ll earn the ability to cast a sphere around the Prince that will make him float in mid-air at the point you conjured it. This is a very handy power that gives players the ability to save the Prince from a punishing fall.

When you combine all three powers, you have the ability to create your own path — you’re no longer restricted to the specific line that’s been laid out by the level designers. If you can figure a way to get from Point A to Point B without going the way the developer intended, go right ahead. Granted, by the time you do get all three powers the level designs are still laid out in a specific way that requires the use of the hook, spire, and sphere one after another, but it at least feels like you’ve been given freedom to do what you want.

The game is deceptively extensive and the adventure just keeps going and going. When you think you’ve come to the end, another story arc appears and you’re exploring far more than you ever thought could be held inside an ancient kingdom. The storyline will take at least 12 to 15 hours the first run through, and that’s just going by the in-game clock that doesn’t take into account all the deaths and restarts that will inevitably happen. If you’re worried you’ll blow through this one the first time through in a day, forget it, It’s not going to happen.

By now it’s a given that any game in the “Super Mario” franchise is a project Nintendo takes seriously. Even last year’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a game that I felt played it a little too safe, was still an incredibly fun throwback to what made (and still makes) the classic 8 and 16-bit installments such timeless videogames. Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a stigma similar to last year’s Mario game: the Galaxy design already wowed us three years ago, so Nintendo would really have to work hard to make jaded gamers stand up and take notice.

And that’s what Nintendo did.

There’s no denying that Super Mario Galaxy is the foundation for Super Mario Galaxy 2. The sequel uses the same engine, same controls, and same basic concept. So if anything, the reason why Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so damn fantastic is mostly due to the fact that the team learned from the first game: what worked, what needed fixing, and how to improve on such an already masterful Wii creation. The result of that effort is one of the most refined and most fulfilling videogame experiences of this generation.

If you have not had the chance to play this game yet then you are missing out on some great fun. This is a racing game that the whole family can enjoy and it will certainly ensure rivalries within the whole household.

As far as the actual racing experience goes, a combination of streamlining and additions has created one of the tightest, tensest Mario Kart’s yet. There’s certainly an increase in tactical possibilities: while the much-debated drift simplification reduces its place as a pro-tool, the addition of tricks – offering a slight speed boost when used off jumps – means you’ll always be on the hunt for ramps and slopes, assessing any advantages out-of-the-way objects might offer. Likewise, bikes prove far more than the arbitrary addition they might first seem. Offering slightly nippier speeds, tighter cornering and wheelie-boosting, they really can shave precious seconds off in a race. The downside is that heavier vehicles can easily push bikes round the track, plus they only have one drift boost level, unlike the two on a kart.

What’s more, this isn’t Mario Kart for the Casuals, whatever the inclusion of the Wii Wheel might suggest. Sure, it’s simplified in certain areas, but most of these tweaks are logical and help reinstate some of the racer’s straightforward arcade roots. Actually, while we’re on the subject of the wheel, it works just fine. It takes a bit of getting used to and lacks responsiveness compared to MKW’s other control options, but it’s a sturdy, satisfying bit of kit and does its job as far as presenting newcomers with a less intimidating control scheme goes. Chances are though, Mario Kart pros will ditch the peripheral once their curiosity has been sated, plumping for either a Wiimote/nunchuck combo, Classic or GameCube controller – all of which work perfectly.

Theres a new contender for the title of worst Wii game of all time, and as the Highlander once said, there can be only one. The challenger is known simply as Block Party. Formed deep within the womb of time, the game was spawned by the development and publishing tandem of Ivolgamus and Activision, the same dream team which gave birth to Monkey Mischief: Party Time, a similarly repugnant slab of immutable Wii detritus. For Block Party, however, Ivolgamus and Activision have gone to unprecedented lengths, using the blood of a goblin, seven drops of mucous from the Wind Squid and spoiled milk from the rancid teat of a three-headed demon to create a game so unspeakably unplayable, even the awful Chicken Shoot trembles at its very presence. Or so Ive read on parchment scrolls dating back millennia. And Internet forums. In all seriousness, Block Party is bad. Really bad, in fact, and I dont mean that in a Well, I didnt like it, but you might sense.
