I actually played this game only about two years ago and I beat it for the first time without getting killed even once! How did I do that? Get the Spreader, keep shooting no matter what and that’s it, it was so easy. Mybe the reason that this game was so easy to me, was probably because I can also beat Contra without dying. Quick reflexes FTW!
Maybe the reason is the level design. There is no longer multible paths and therefor not as many places where enemys can attack on you.
Intresting fact though, in the European version (Probotector 2: Return of the Evil Forces), you get 30 lives with the Konami code instead of 10.
